{Atmosphere} The Art of Living.

I am a magazine ripper. I get it from my Dad. If just one color, image, or sentence jumps out – RIPPP - and the page is added to a file, taped into a journal, or mailed via the good old fashioned postal service to someone he thinks would be inspired as well. One of my favorite design articles, “Charlotte Moss on the Art of Living”, Dad ripped from the November issue of House Beautiful magazine in 2013 and mailed off to me in San Francisco. Tethered at the edges and underlined throughout, this article still circulates my desk and pin-up board on a regular basis. Charlotte so perfectly sums up “Atmosphere” and its importance on any well-designed space.

“As much about our physical comfort as our intellectual satisfaction, rooms are metaphors of our lives. They echo our memories, hold evidence of our accumulated knowledge, and often whisper about our dreams for the future. What makes a room work, what makes it wonderful, is nothing you can see: It’s called atmosphere. The enthusiasm that created it, the joy of living in it, the vitality expressed through sharing it, all of this is silently, invisibly present. Atmosphere can only be created if all the senses are considered in the decoration of a house. Colors that soothe or excite, materials that beg to be touched, beautiful and personal objects that draw the eye, fragrance that lures you, and music that has you lip-syncing – when we engage all the senses, we engage ourselves, our total being. Decorating is just the beginning.”

These words immediately bring me to Christmas day in my parents New Jersey home. Christmas is always a large family affair at the Haines’. My parents have a particular knack for creating spaces that encourage entertaining. Flickering luminaries down the driveway greet guests and if we are lucky there is a dusting of white snow to add a winter warmth. Let me take your coat, pass you a cocktail, and we will have you singing Christmas carols in no time! I can guarantee you will be coaxed into a game of hide and seek and as you wander the hallways and hide behind the tassel trimmed curtains you cannot help but notice that everywhere you turn there is an effort to make all things beautiful. Nothing elaborate, but something to make each room feel special. To us the rooms of my parents home hold many memories and each special detail pairs with feelings of comfort and familiarity.

And Charlotte reminds us, “Why do we decorate? Why do we create these beautiful rooms? The answer, quite simply, is to live in them fully, to embrace the art of living, to engage all the senses.”

{Junior League Home Tour 2013} Tablescape Design.

Last weekend the San Francisco Junior League held one of their biggest fundraisers of the year, the 19th Annual Home Tour. The tour featured five very different and beautiful homes in San Francisco's Cow Hollow & Pacific Heights districts. I had a blast designing a tablescape for a dining room on the tour. The home I was assigned to was colorful, modern, and impeccable down to every detail. I decided to keep the table simple with just a small pop of color to compliment the space. I used white matte ceramic plates and glossy persimmon bowls from Heath Ceramics. The placemats added suble texture as they were a white mesh material with a polished metal edge detail. Many thanks to Natalie Bowen Designs for donating the white hydrangea and olive branch floral arrangements - they were perfect!

Friday Favorites.

Happy Friday, friends! I am so excited to be adding a new freelance project to my plate. This week I started working with Interior Design Fair on the new Airbnb office. I have had a week full of sourcing, scheming, and more sourcing for various projects. I wanted to share with you some of my favorite recent finds.

I just love these glass wall vases! Perfect to cluster above an entry console, dresser, or desk. Each week you can pick a few flowers or branches for a fresh and seasonally changing arrangement to soften your space.

I discovered Asher Market while perusing the SF Renegade Craft Fair last weekend. Their Alpaca throws were soft, colorful, and instantly added to my personal 'wish list'. I was very impressed by this vendor!

How awesome are these removable wall designs?! I am loving the idea of using these wall features in kid's bedrooms, playrooms, or to add a fun flair to an office space. The possibilities are endless... check out Mur to see their wide range of geometric designs and colors.

Hope everyone has a relaxing weekend!

Room Anatomy.

{Via Sacramento Street}
Live on Sacramento Street blog... check out this weeks Room Anatomy! As much as I am a girl for soft and subtle colors, a great punch of saturated color is great when well executed. In particular, I am loving the idea of using Benjamin Moore's "Admiral Blue" in a clients bedroom.

To complete the space, I suggest clustering a few of Jennifer Ament's unique prints above the bed.  Each of Jennifer's pieces are hand printed in her seattle studio featuring the linocut technique where an illustration is transfered onto a linoleum surface, carved, rolled with a special type of ink, and finally pressed onto a piece of hand-milled paper from France. Jennifer takes her inspiration from natural wonders, old books from the 19th and early 20th centuries, French graphic design from the '70s and '80s.

{San Francisco Decorator Showcase 2013} Catherine Kwong Design

Finally!! I can share with you what has been keeping me busy and creatively inspired the past few months. As many of you know, I have been working with Catherine Kwong Design on the design, development, and installation of the Living Room for this years San Francisco Showcase.

The living room... what a fun project to tackle! It's Mick & Bianca during their early, young and wild years. The glamorous and madly-in-love years. It's the destination for late-night parties, impromptu concerts, and an abundance of Champagne. The rooms existing ceiling set the tone for Parisian opulence and these classical details were paired with contemporary style. The floor, inspired by a Cy Twombly painting, was painted a high-gloss midnight blue. Layered details throughout the room include fringe, bronze pyramid studs, elaborate window treatment trim complete with an unfinished edge, lacquered parchment, polished cut stone, silk taffeta and touches of gold.

{All photos by Bess Friday}

The showcase house is open until May 27th for the public to experience and enjoy. Seeking inspiration? Grab some friends and make an afternoon out of it!

Lazy Weekend. Busy Week.

HeLlloOO ApRiL!! Wowzers, you showed up quickly.

The last weekend of March was a little mixture of everything... Date night at The Abbot's Cellar (a beer guru's heaven!) - a very productive client meeting in the Marina - lots of catch-up with friends - and while it rained I snuggled up for a major catch up session of 'Girls'. If anyone knows the ultimate cure for the cough that never ends I BEG AND PLEAD you to share it with me - I am determined to leave my March sickness behind!

Off to the races already for April with lighting installations starting today at the Showcase. So fun to see the space getting lit up! Check in on Thursday for a new Room Anatomy feature on Sacramento Street. This week it will be a peek into a San Francisco boy's nursery.  I guess with both my sister and a client expecting soon, nursery design is on my mind.

Bring on the brass.

{Workstead}
{Amy Meier Design}
In my opinion, San Diego based interior designer, Amy Meier, and Brooklyn based architecture and design collaborative firm, Workstead, have hit the nail on the head with the touches of brass used in both of these kitchen designs. Whether it be found in the drawer pulls, switch plates, around the knobs of the gas range, an oversized range hood, or in the light fixtures I think brass is a very effective accent when paired with simple white cabinets. Workstead took the look in more of an organic modern direction pairing subtle brushed brass accents with a locally crafted black walnut countertop. Amy Meier kept it to a clean and classic feel with solid black granite counter top, white subway tiles, and chrome/stainless steel fittings and appliances.

Thoughts on the brass?

Loving.

{Designed by Massucco Warner Miller}
One of the best things about babysitting in San Francisco is being able to spend time in inspiring homes designed by many various talented designers. One of my favorites is a home done my Massucco Warner Miller and in particular I love the white ostrich leather built in banquette dining space in the Kitchen.  Nick Coley, a San Francisco artist, created the diptych piece featured above the banquette as part of his school bus series. I visited Nick's art studio in North Beach recently and cannot wait to find a space to place one of his saturated San Francisco cityscapes!
